Remembering Dr. Garner D. Morgan
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Garner D. Morgan, beloved colleague, esteemed leader, and past President of the Maryland State Dental Association.
Dr. Morgan, a proud graduate of the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (DDS ’80), dedicated his life to the practice of dentistry and to uplifting those most in need. In 2022, he was honored with the prestigious alumni award recognizing meritorious professional leadership and service to both UMSOD and the greater community—a testament to his unwavering commitment to excellence, compassion, and service.

A 1976 graduate of St. Mary’s College of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Dr. Morgan went on to earn his dental degree in 1980from the then-Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. As a student, he demonstrated early leadership as the 1979 class vice president and president of the Gamma Pi Delta Prosthodontics Society. Shortly after graduation, he established a private practice in Mechanicsville, Md., where he provided care with integrity and compassion for more than four decades.
Dr. Morgan’s influence extended far beyond the dental chair. As immediate past president of the MSDA and a long-time member of the American Dental Association, Southern Maryland and Patuxent Study Clubs, he helped shape policy, foster community engagement, and support his colleagues across the state. His tenure as MSDA President was particularly impactful—he was instrumental in developing a statewide protocol for more than 40 Mission of Mercy events, enabling thousands of uninsured and underserved Marylanders to access vital oral health services.
Together with a passionate team, Dr. Morgan helped launch the Southern Maryland Mission of Mercy, serving as both clinic chair and provider. From treating 50 patients at a time to coordinating care for more than 700individuals during intensive two-day clinics, his efforts left an enduring legacy. In recognition of his work, he received the Maryland Rural Health Association’s Outstanding Rural Health Practitioner Award in 2012.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Morgan was a pillar of the St. Mary’s County community. He served on numerous boards including those of St. Mary’s Nursing Center, St. Mary’s Hospital, Mother Catherine Spalding School, and the Rotary Club. He was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bushwood, Md., and a dedicated advocate for public health, education, and environmental stewardship in his region.
Dr. Garner Morgan’s legacy is one of integrity, leadership, generosity, and heart. He leaves behind a profound impact on Maryland dentistry and an enduring example of what it means to serve.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched.
